In electroplating, silver plating is primarily used for industrial applications, particularly electrical connectors.
Silver plating can be applied in both rack and barrel plating methods. Silver plating specifications will specify matte, semi-bright or bright finish with or without a chromate post treatment to improve tarnish resistance. Plating specifications also designate the base coating to be applied under the plating, such as copper or nickel.
Silver offers good corrosion resistance depending on the base metal. It will tarnish easily, but can be sealed with an anti tarnish to slow process. Solderability is excellent, but will decrease with age. Silver is the best electrical conductor. Silver has excellent lubricity and smear characteristics for anti-galling uses on static seals, bushing etc.
